One fine Saturday, we decided to go on a 100 km drive from our place to this lovely little destination tucked in Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana. It is an ideal one day trip from Hyderabad and gives one an insight into architectural marvel of the bygone Chalukya era and the intricacies involved in erecting such a magnificent imposing structure on a monolithic rock. The walk to the top can be a little exhausting but it is worth every step of yours. So, make sure you choose a pleasant day to travel and be hydrated before you start the climb.
This fort was built on a 500 ft monolithic egg shaped rock by Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI approximately in the year 1076 AD. Stairs to the fort still remain intact including moats, ponds, trap doors, armory & stables. The citadel at the top gives a beautiful bird's eye view. During that the time, the fort was considered practically impregnable. Along with the imposing height, the fort gave a superior advantage to the ruling king and his army. At the entrance of the fort, there is a statue placed, which was found during the nearby area around the fort. One can find inscriptions in Kannada & Telugu which gives an indication of the prevailing lifestyle of the bygone era.
The drive from Hyderabad is a smooth one. The visiting hours are Monday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. There is a rock climbing school attached to the fort complex which offers 3 levels of rock climbing course. This is an initiative of Telangana Tourism in association with Transcend Adventures Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad. This is the place where Poorna Malavath, the youngest girl to climb Mt. Everest trained. The school also offers a weekend climbing course.
So next time if you planning a quick weekend getaway, Bhongir could be one of the interesting destinations which you could plan with your family. It definitely would be an enriching experience for kids especially as they know more about our rich past. Also you could combine it with rock climbing weekend course for an overall satisfying experience.
